The poll results are in, and our readers have decided that Vlad Morozov’s time of 42.87 in the 100 freestyle was the most impressive National High School Record set in May.

- 45% – Vlad Morozov, Torrance-Torrance High, 100 Free-42.87
- 5% – Maddy Schaefer, Mountain View-St. Francis High, 50 free (independent)-22.24
- 1% – Carondelet High School, Concord-Carondelet Catholic School For Girls, 200 Medley Relay-1:40.80
Morozov’s 100 free time of 42.87 just barely outtouched Cindy Tran’s 51.85 100 backstroke time in our poll. That these two marks were well ahead of the field was no surprise. The 100 free is probably the biggest glamour event in swimming, and USC-bound Morozov is now the only high school swimmer to go under the 43-second mark.
Tran was close behind at 40%, and her swim definitely got my vote. Her time of 51.85 in the 100 backstroke broke the National record by a full second, which is an almost unheard of margin at this level. Not only that, but the previous record was held by one of the greatest backstrokers ever: Natalie Coughlin. Tran will follow Coughlin to California in the fall.
But the public has spoken, and Morov’s 100 free is the winner. The big question now is how long will that mark stand. David Nolan of Hershey High in Hershey Pennsylvania went a 43.27 this year as a junior, and will certainly challenge Morozov’s mark.

wonder why morozov is not listed on heat sheets for us nationals. he is ranked in top 100 in the world under usa, not russia. maybe he’s saving it up for jr. nats the following week.
Last I heard, he was making statements that indicated that he really liked his russian coaches. He may be listed under USA because he’s not been officially made a part of a National Team yet (has he swum any international meets?) and is currently registered with a USA-Swimming program. I’m not sure he even has American citizenship, does he?
