Ariana Kukors Makes Bolles Debut at Southern Zone South Sectionals, Another Teenage Mid-Distance Star Shines
Posted on March 19, 2012, in Events, Meet Coverage, National Team, with 0 CommentsIt was announced in early January that world record holder Ariana Kukors had moved from southern California to northern Florida to train with Sergio Lopez and his staff at Bolles Swimming. The past weekend she made her debut for her new team at the Southern Zone Sectional in Orlando. Also taking part in the meet were national team members Ryan Lochte, Amanda Weir, and Conor Dwyer, along with international stars Arkady Vyatchanin, Sebastian Rousseau and the Fraser brothers.
Kukors posted the eighth fastest 200 IM in the world this season with a 2:12.26. That time makes her the top American in the early months of the season in her lone event of the meet.
Ryan Lochte topped the field in the 200 free with a 1:49.09 to just out touched training partner Conor Dwyer who touched at 1:49.17. Third went to fellow training partner Peter Vanderkaay in 1:51.01. Lochte also took first in the 100 fly (54.12), second in the 100 back (54.89), third in the 100 free (50.56). His time in the 100 back makes him the 24th fastest on the season.
Another youngest, 14-year old Rebecca Mann of Clearwater Aquatics continues to add to the next generation of American mid-distance freestylers with a time of 4:10.72 in the 400. That time moves her into the top 40 in the world and among other teenagers Katie Ledecky, Gillian Ryan, and Leah Smith. She also posted the top time in the world in the 1500 with a 16:16.82; as this is a non-Olympic event many top swimmers don’t get many opportunities to swim this event at major meets but it’s impressive all the same. Her 800 time of 8:33.29 puts her 14th in the world this season.
Olympian Amanda Weir topped the field in the sprints freestyles as she touched in 25.34 and 55.27 respectively. Weir has already been faster in both events at the Austin Grand Prix in January.
Along with his runner-up finish in the 200 free, Conor Dwyer won the 200 IM (2:02.77) and 400 free (3:56.91). He also finished fourth in the 100 free (50.70).
Russian transplant Arkady Vyatchanin took home wins in the 100 back at 54.79 and 200 back in 2:01.04. That time in the 100 back moves him into 21st in the world this year.
Sebastien Rousseau of South Africa who also trains in Gainesville won the 200 fly (2:00.59) and placed second in the 100 fly (54.17) and 200 IM (2:04.28).
Brazilian Felipe Lima swept the breaststrokes with times of 1:01.35 and 2:17.41. He has been faster this season from the Missouri Grand Prix just about a month ago.
The 100 free belonged to the Fraser brothers as younger brother Brett beat older brother Shaune 50.26 to 50.41.
It’s also worth noting that recent NJCAA champion and South African Bradley Tandy took home a win in the 50 free touching in 22.65. He was also fifth in the star-studded 100 free at 50.82.
Junior national record holder Ryan Murphy also competed but was well off his personal bests in the midst of heavy training as he was fourth in the 200 back (2:02.37) and fifth in the 100 back (56.94).
