Dismissed Tennessee Head Coach John Trembley Under Criminal Investigation
Posted on January 4, 2012, in College, News, with 4 CommentsAfter being dismissed from his position as men’s head swim coach at Tennessee on Tuesday, John Trembley is now under investigation by the Knoxville Police Department, according to the Tennessee fansite GoVolsXtra.
The case was referred to Knoxville police by the University of Tennessee Police Department, though no further comment has been given by either department or the university.
Sources with intimate knowledge of the program were unsurprised by the news. They indicated that Trembley has struggled with the death of longtime assistant Joe Hendee last year, as well as his own personal health issues; one person even said that most were simply waiting out the clock until Trembley stepped aside.
The worst fear in the minds of many we’ve talked to about this, given the current climate of college sports (and sports in general) is that there is a sexual abuse situation similar to the one we saw at Penn State earlier this year. These same sources, however, have indicated that, to their knowledge, the situation that led to Trembley’s dismissal is not related to any sort of sexual abuse.
