Though USA-Swimming is pretty-well settled on their roster for the 2011 World University Games, which are to be held in Shenzen, China beginning in August, they had yet to announce the entries for the non-Olympic events until this week. These swimmers were pulled from the pool of participants who were already entered in the meet, and were pretty predictable (100 strokers swim the 50′s, distance swimmers swim the alternate distance events). The US has also added Michael Klueh to their lineup for the 1500 free, a spot which was vacated when Sean Ryan and Andre Gemmell were both called up to the World Championship squad for open water swimming. Click here for the full rosters.

This is a great opportunity for some of these college swimmers who rarely get to swim these events, especially in long course.

Open Water
USA Swimming has also announced the open water swimmers for the World University Games, that will have only one open water race – the 10k. These names aren’t always as familiar, because these swimmers are open water specialists and therefore don’t necessarily make a big impact  in college.

Tristin Baxter is a sophomore at Arizona State, who failed to qualify for NCAA’s though she placed 7th in the mile at NCAA’s. Dimaris Iriondo will begin her freshman season at Princeton in the fall.

On the men’s side, the names are a little more familiar. Ryan Feeley just finished his sophomore year at Michigan, where he placed 9th in the 500 free and 16th in the mile individually. Connor Signorin just finished his freshman season at Florida, where he earned one SEC Freshman of the Week award in January.
